Road rules in the Czech Republic
When you are hiring a car abroad, it’s useful to be prepared for the different driving laws in the country you are travelling to as well as checking the documents you need to carry.
To help make your trip to as smooth as possible, we've put together some of the key road rules in the Czech Republic

Which side of the road?
In the Czech Republic, please drive on the RIGHT side of the road.
Unique Country Driving Laws
- It is mandatory to use your headlights during the day as well as night
- Do not turn right on a red light
- Using mobile phone whilst driving is not permitted
- Use your horn sparingly and don’t use your horn at all in Prague’s central city during the night
Speed Limits
For a standard Avis rental vehicle with no trailers:
- Urban areas: 31 mph (50 km/h)
- Rural areas: 55 mph (90 km/h)
- Motorways: 80 mph (130 km/h)
Please be aware of changing speeds indicated by road signs.
Child Safety / Seatbelt Laws
It is compulsory for all inside the vehicle to wear a seatbelt.
- Children under 36kg and/or under 150cm must use the correct safety seat.
Please note - It is the child’s parent / guardian or vehicle renter’s responsibility to fit the child seat.

If it’s possible to do so, stop in the emergency lane/hard shoulder. Turn on your hazards, put on your reflective jacket and place the warning triangle 30m behind the car. If you’re on a motorway place it 100m behind the car. Then call for help.
